This build was my first build after watching countless hours of guitar building vidoes on Youtube during lockdown the first few months of the pandeic. Somoe of my favorite videos were from Crimson Guitars in the UK. Watching all 24 hours of his 24 hour guitar build challenge, then 12 hour, then the 6 hr build, was quite inspiring. All of a sudden, the large piece of walnut I had been saving in the garage for the past 15 years had a purpose. And since I always wanted a Les Paul to compliment my guitar collection, this seemed like the perfect diversion. And so it started.
I was quick to find out that work effort put in on building the neck and fingerboard is more than 1/2 the total work building the guitar. At least steps to completion of a finished neck is considerably more involved than the body. For this build I also decided to bind the fretboard with the binding capping the ends of the frets. This involved trimming the binding around the end of each fret, to match the shape of the fret. This is a lot of trimming and shaping and ends up giving you less playable fret surface than when the fret ends overhang the binding. You just need a proper pair of fret nippers which I purchaed an demplaoted for the next Gibson build.
Then there is the finishing process. I prefer the natural wood look so I have been mostly focusing on a tung oil finish. This can give you anything from a satin finish to the bright shine. For this project I emploted several coats of polymerized tung oil for reasonable shine.
This build was all about templates. There were at least 6 different templates used to build the body. These were all designed and drawn up in Coreldraw. Printed out and transfered to 1/2"" MDF. Two alignment pins in each template were used to align each template on the boady blank. Usimg the templates, the body outline was traced and roughly cutout on the band saw. Tabs were left on the otline to support template alignment pins at the neck and tail button positions. Bult material was removed from the body cavity using various Forstner bits and the drill press. The remaining wood was removed using the template and a router. Next was to route the recess for the inlaid maple top plate, which was sized using the matching inner template shown in the gallery pic.
Using the outer top plate outline template, two separate routed channels were made using two different sized template guides. The larger 1" guide was used to cut the purfling channel which was inlaid with B/W/B .05" cello purfling. The seam between the inlaid top and Padauk body was inlaid with a .06" black plastic binding. Using the same template and different sized router guides insures the two binding channels are parallel. The outer body dimensions are also determined by the same template so we have a uniform edge except in the arm rest extension. The reamining work on the top is routing the openings for the pickups the eelectronics.
